Gâmbia/Hon. Minister Dr. Demba Sabally Hands Over Tricycles to Boost Dairy Value Chain
(ANG) – As part of the Government’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector, the Honourable Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Security, Dr. Demba Sabally, today presided over the handing over of tricycles to the Mini Dairy in Farafenni under the Small Ruminant Enhancement Project.
The Farafenni Mini Dairy, which is primarily managed by dedicated women milk processors, has long played a vital role in supporting local livelihoods. Previously, the women relied on selling raw and sour milk, with significant quantities going to waste during the rainy season due to the abundance of milk and limited preservation and transportation facilities.
To address this challenge, the project has constructed two milk collection centres in Dibba Kunda and Duta Bulu, where farmers can aggregate their fresh milk. The newly handed-over tricycles will transport the milk from these collection centres to the Farafenni Mini Dairy, where it will be processed into yoghurt and other dairy products, reducing post-harvest losses while adding value to locally produced milk.
Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Minister Dr. Demba Sabally reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering women, improving rural livelihoods, and promoting value addition in the livestock sector. He encouraged the beneficiaries to make effective use of the tricycles and ensure their proper maintenance to sustain the gains of the project.
This initiative marks another important milestone in enhancing the dairy value chain, increasing incomes for livestock farmers, and strengthening food security across The Gambia.
